What causes pregnancy acne?
Acne during pregnancy can occur in anybody, but it is most likely to occur between the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. The reason for this is due to the hormones being produced during these two time periods as well as the added stress being put on the body.
Hormones known as androgens are the root cause of pregnancy acne. As this hormone is produced, the glands on your skin grow larger and produce larger amounts of sebum. Sebum is a natural substance produced by the body and it is needed for healthy skin. However, too much sebum leads to clogged pores that grow bacterium that causes acne.
If you experience an increase in acne during your monthly period, then you’re likely to experience pregnancy acne as well and often in larger quantities. The good news is that pregnancy acne is 100% treatable!
How to Cure Pregnancy Acne
Pregnancy acne will go away on its own after giving birth. Pending the severity of the acne, it may take several months or require some trips to an esthetician or dermatologist.
If waiting for the acne to go away naturally isn’t something you are particularly wanting to do, you do have options!
What to avoid
Pregnancy acne is directly related to hormone production. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done about that part of the picture. However, there are a few things to avoid doing in order to keep pregnancy acne at bay and/or prevent it from worsening.
The best thing you can do during your pregnancy allows your body to do whatever it needs to do in order to function the best that it can during these nine months. Sometimes, that means you’ll see a flare-up in acne. However, by reducing your stress level, consuming a balanced diet, and using pregnancy-approved products to treat acne, you’re likely to keep acne at bay and reduce the breakouts you currently have.
