Pregnancy and Acne

Pregnancy is a beautiful natural occurrence for those lucky enough to experience it. However, with that joy and excitement comes a burst of stubborn acne. For some pregnant women, this sudden appearance is minimal, but for others it is substantial. Either way, it can be disheartening. Before we can understand how to treat such blemishes, we have to understand why they occur.

What causes pregnancy acne?

Acne during pregnancy can occur in anybody, but it is most likely to occur between the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. The reason for this is due to the hormones being produced during these two time periods as well as the added stress being put on the body.
Hormones known as androgens are the root cause of pregnancy acne. As this hormone is produced, the glands on your skin grow larger and produce larger amounts of sebum. Sebum is a natural substance produced by the body and it is needed for healthy skin. However, too much sebum leads to clogged pores that grow bacterium that causes acne.
If you experience an increase in acne during your monthly period, then you’re likely to experience pregnancy acne as well and often in larger quantities. The good news is that pregnancy acne is 100% treatable!

How to Cure Pregnancy Acne

Pregnancy acne will go away on its own after giving birth. Pending the severity of the acne, it may take several months or require some trips to an esthetician or dermatologist.
If waiting for the acne to go away naturally isn’t something you are particularly wanting to do, you do have options!
  • Wash your face twice daily with a face wash approved for use during pregnancy
  • Use a face scrub 3x/week that is approved for use during pregnancy
  • Take advantage of acne-fighting serums that can prevent breakouts, fight current ones, and help keep the skin healthy. Be sure it is approved for use during pregnancy.
  • Work on de-stressing yourself when you can. Stress is a primary culprit for pregnancy. Whereas yes, pregnancy itself is stressful on the body, you can help reduce some of that stress. Consider taking relaxing baths, short naps, listening to soothing music, and practicing yoga or meditation.
  • Eat a balanced, healthy diet filled with fresh veggies, fruits, and healthy fats needed for keeping your skin in prime, acne-fighting condition.

What to avoid

Pregnancy acne is directly related to hormone production. Unfortunately, there is little that can be done about that part of the picture. However, there are a few things to avoid doing in order to keep pregnancy acne at bay and/or prevent it from worsening.
  • Do not pick at existing breakouts. This will only make them worse and spread any acne-causing bacteria hiding within the pores.
  • Do not see an esthetician who is not trained in treating acne during pregnancy.
  • Do not use any products that could be harmful to your unborn child to treat acne
  • Do not consume an excess of junk food as this will flare your pores and lead to an even greater increase in acne
The best thing you can do during your pregnancy allows your body to do whatever it needs to do in order to function the best that it can during these nine months. Sometimes, that means you’ll see a flare-up in acne. However, by reducing your stress level, consuming a balanced diet, and using pregnancy-approved products to treat acne, you’re likely to keep acne at bay and reduce the breakouts you currently have.
