How to Take Care of the Donor Area After Hair Transplant

Whether you have just received a hair transplant, are considering getting one, or know someone who is doing either of the two, you’re portably wondering, what happens after the transplant? How does one go about taking care of the donor hair area after a hair transplant? Well, we did the research for you! There are six primary things to consider during the recovery phase, let’s break them down!

Table Of Content

Washing the hair transplant area

After getting a hair transplant, you’ll likely be advised to wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair again. The reason for this is the donor area is extremely sensitive right now and needs to be able to heal. You will risk ripping the transplant area if you scrub too hard so be gentle!

What is the correct sleeping position?

After a hair transplant, you’ll want to ask your surgeon what their recommendation is for sleeping. Once the transplant has settled, the way that you sleep has no effect on the area. However, during the healing process, there are some things you’ll want to consider pending the area of the hair transplant.
For example, regardless of the area, you’ll want to sleep with your head elevated for at least 7 days as this will decrease inflammation. You should also avoid sleeping directly in the area the transplant occurred. So, if the transplant occurred on the left side of your head, sleep on the right, etc.

Shaving your head after transplant

To most people’s surprise, you actually can shave your head after a transplant and the follicle will continue to produce hair-like a non-transplanted follicle would! So, if you’re wanting a specific style that involves shaving maybe the side of your head or something similar, go for it! Just wait at least a month before doing so to avoid damaging the follicle.
If at some point you want to completely shave your head bald permanently though, you would have to maintain it as the hair follicle would continue to produce hair.

Physical activity

To the best of your ability, avoid strenuous physical activity after a hair transplant. Your body is healing. You want to allow it the time it needs to heal without infection, tearing, or damaged in any way. Physical activity, whereas it may not directly affect your scalp, affects your body’s ability to heal in a timely manner. By avoiding physical activity, you’re letting your body relax and recover so you don’t waste your time, money, or scalp!

Medication and hair product

You will be recommended specific medications to reduce the likelihood of infection as well as specific hair products to use during your recovery time. These recommendations should be taken seriously as there are to help you heal as quickly as possible.

Heling and recovery times

The majority of people fully heal from a hair transplant surgery in about 30 days. However, some take longer or heal faster pending the way their scalp responds to the surgery and how well they follow the recovery instructions.
Getting a best hair transplant is an exciting time and an amazing option for people who cannot regrow their hair on their own. Whether this was for your or someone you know, understanding how to take care of your hair transplant area post-surgery is critical in recovering properly and maintaining a healthy hair follicle! Be sure to rest up, follow recommendations of your dermatologist , and sleep in the correct way in order to avoid any damage.
