5 Poor Lifestyle Habits Responsible for Causing Wrinkles

Wrinkles on a pug, super cute. Wrinkles on our face…not so much! Whereas wrinkles are a natural part of aging that everyone will experience at some point in their lives, if you can help slow the appearance, why not do so! Something many people fail to consider is that wrinkles actually stem not only from aging, but from lifestyle choices.
The five most common reasons for wrinkles include smoking, drinking, sleeping on your face, eating junk food, and drinking coffee. All of these pieces create the perfect wrinkled puzzle! By focusing on your health, you are likely to see a reduction in wrinkles as well as prevent early onset of wrinkles in the future. What makes these five lifestyle habits and choices so significant in the development of wrinkles?

Eating junk food

The definition of junk food varies, but essentially, it’s any food that is processed and contains unhealthy and/or unnatural ingredients and added sugars. The most common junk food item to avoid is any form of processed carbohydrates such as,
  • Bread
  • Pasta
  • Baked goods
In no way are we telling you to give up these items entirely but check the ingredients. Overly processed carbohydrates damage the collagen production in our skin. Collagen is what keeps our skin bouncy and helps prevent wrinkles. A good rule of thumb is if you don’t know what the ingredients in something are or you cannot pronounce them, you likely shouldn’t be eating them!

Drinking a lot of alcohol

Whereas yes, a glass of wine with dinner a few nights each week is absolutely acceptable, drinking an entire bottle every couple of days is a whole other story. Even drinking daily can be a problem, regardless of the amount. The reason for this is alcohol is a dehydrating substance. Dehydration is a prime culprit of wrinkle production. By reducing your alcohol consumption, you’ll prevent wrinkles from developing and reduce the ones that you currently have.

Drinking excess coffee

Similar to alcohol, coffee is a dehydrating substance. You’ll want to limit your coffee consumption to no more than a few times per week, or at max once daily but under 8oz. You are also better off drinking black coffee with some natural sweetener compared to a fancy caramel macchiato with whipped cream from your local coffee chain, 2as they also contain added sugar, equally as harmful to the skin!

Smoking

To state the obvious, cigarettes contain thousands of toxic chemicals that damage our skin cells, leading to premature development of wrinkles. On top of this fact, smokers use the muscles around their mouth much more frequently than nonsmokers. The result of this frequent muscle use is wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and even forehead.

Sleeping on your face

Bad news for stomach and side sleepers, when you sleep with your face against the pillow, you have no idea what’s happening to your skin while you sleep. You’re likely scrunching your skin up in strange ways throughout the night, leading to wrinkles in unique spots such as along your cheeks, sides of your eyes, even your neck. Try sleeping on your back!
There are numerous reasons for the appearance of wrinkles, but these five are the most common culprits next to natural aging. Consider making some lifestyle changes like swapping coffee for herbal tea and cigarettes for chewing gum. There are many ways to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but we recommend starting here!
